Matthew was an avid collector of books and an eclectic reader always searching for new insights and surprises in a labrynth of ancient and contemporary contexts.
The Estate has donated over 200 wonderful art books from his collection to the thriving Penzance School of Art (Penwith College) on Morrab Road and Judith has stamped them all for posterity (Feb 2020) prior to them reaching their new shelves later in the month.
The archive has however retained many of his books including an exceptional collection on Australian and Aboriginal art and culture with which he was fascinated in the last years of his life. |

The Archive has moved with Judith Lanyon into Penzance and her work on the database and the film about Matthew’s art and life continues. Thank you to Janet Axten, Barbara Santi and James Barry for continued expertise, support and boundless enthusiasm. We had a very successful event at the St Ives Festival in Sept 2019 showing excerpts from the film No Holds Barred, with a discussion about work in progress with the panel, Barbara, Janet and Judith. Such warmth and encouragement from the audience – huge thanks to all who came.
Plans are underway for a small exhibition of Matthew’s work at the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives in September 2020 which may coincide with a number of film showings. |
